The
Hungarian Revolution or Uprising[5] of 1956 (
Hungarian:
1956-os forradalom or
felkelés) was a spontaneous nationwide
revolt against the government of the
People's Republic of Hungary and its
Soviet-imposed
policies, lasting from 23 October until 10 November 1956. It was the
first serious blow to Soviet control since the U.S.S.R. forces drove out
the Nazis at the end of World War II. Despite the fact that the
uprising was not successful, it had a large impact and would come to
play a role in the downfall of the Soviet Union decades later.
